Happy Homebirth Stories

Sherry gave me some incredible coaching and I finally got the hang of the pushing thing.  She was so specific in her coaching and really made me understand how to push.  I feel so blessed to have had a midwife who could so clearly explain to me what I needed to be doing.  Had she just kept telling me to push, but not explained how, I might still be lying on the floor waiting for Sam to come out.  I really believed I would have a fast labor and delivery of my 3rd baby. Rory was in a hurry to get out and Elliot was quick enough herself. But as all things in life, expectations are never fully met. Well I should start by saying I took a birth refresher course to familiarize myself with what my body would be doing during each stage of labor but to be honest I let the first half of that course go in one ear and out the other as I hadn’t a need for that information as my body would just go into transition and start pushing a baby out after my water breaks etc….ya know a fast labor.  My birth story began once I had watched The Business of Being Born. The movie made me brave enough to decide that I was going to birth our second child the way I wanted to with our first, but wasn't confident enough to do.  I soon learned that being uneducated of my options left me helpless and at the mercy of the hospital staff.  I was told that due to the risk of infection, I had to have my baby within 24 hours.  They convinced me to have a line put in for fluid, but let me walk around for about an hour to see if labor would begin.  It did not.  After about two hours I was told that I had to have Pitocin.  Well, that was the end of my un-medicated birth.  Within a couple of hours, I was in such pain that I was literally screaming for my epidural.  I was now, unknowingly, a product of the hospital birth system.   Read More...

I had my first two babies in the hospital it is not possible to describe how  fulfilling it was to have had Lilly at home. The care we had with our Midwife Sherry Hopkins was wonderful she has become a close friend even now more than a year and a hafe after the birth of Lilly.  She took the time to listen to whatever concerns I may have had and answered all of our question.  Sherry helped my husband feel comfortable with having a home birth which is a small miracle in itself. When I found out that I was pregnant for the 4th time, I was ecstatic.  Almost immediately, I started thinking about who I would go to for care.  Each of my previous 3 pregnancies were handled differently.  My first pregnancy in 1999 was with a Doctor.  My “birth plan” that included a drug free labor went out the window.  I could write a book about that experience at “one of the best hospitals in San Diego”.  Read More...
